The ThinkFirst Traffic Offenders Program is
an innovative, day-long experiential program designed to educate young
high-risk drivers about the consequences of motor vehicle trauma.
During the program,
young traffic offenders, who are ordered by Missouri courts to attend
the program, follow the same path they would have taken had they been
seriously injured in a crash.
The focus of the program is to inform
the young drivers of the consequences of unsafe driving and to provide
a graphic and realistic view of life as a crash survivor.
This nationally acclaimed program
clearly demonstrates the physical, emotional, financial
and societal costs of injury. The program is conducted once each month
and serves an average of 25 young driving offenders. Participants are
charged $70.00 to attend.
The day begins with an eye-opening tour of the
University Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center. Next, young survivors of
trauma explain firsthand what it’s like to survive a car crash and live with a disability.
An
officer and a representative from the Missouri State Highway Patrol conclude
the day by explaining their role in traffic safety and demonstrating
the Fatal Vision TM goggles.
The
Traffic Offenders Program has been replicated across the United States
and in Canada. Similar programs in Missouri are conducted
in Kansas City, Springfield and Cape Girardeau. |
